4,200 Sailors and Marines to deploy Friday

SAN DIEGO – The amphibious ready group led by the USS Boxer will deploy from San Diego to the Western Pacific and Middle East on Friday, the Navy announced today.

The group includes the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer, amphibious transport dock USS New Orleans and amphibious dock landing ship USS Harpers Ferry.

”We’ve had a very rigorous training cycle to prepare us to execute any mission when called upon,” said Capt. Malcolm Potts, the commander of Amphibious Squadron 1 and the Boxer Amphibious Ready Group. ”I am awed and impressed by the ingenuity, creativity, and industriousness of the 4,200 dedicated sailors and Marines that serve on our ships.”

The ships will embark with about 2,400 Marines from the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, based at Camp Pendleton.

According to the Navy, the group will focus on maritime and theater security. The sailors and Marines will be available for any amphibious assault and Special Forces operations, humanitarian missions and non-combatant operations that become necessary, the Navy said.

I’m hoping that this isn’t a continuation of the failed policies of Bush/Cheney. We don’t need to intervene in other countries domestic matters…..particularly in the middle east. The sooner we get out of "I-Rackistan" the better. We don’t need to put our men and women in harms way for the purposes of "nation building" in regions that don’t want us there or appreciate our efforts

Good luck Devils and Sailors. Don’t forget your wives and families while on libo. At least traffic to Camp Pendleton will get a little lighter.

Marine Units from Camp Pendleton deploy to continue their training and to be closer to the action if they are indeed needed somewhere. We should keep them and their families in our prayers for a routine and uneventful time at sea. Safe voyage and God speed you home.

Because war keeps our troops employed and puts money in their pockets regardless of innocent Iraqis, Afghans, Pakistanis, et al., killed.

Iraqis, Afghans, Pakistanis must die so that our American soldiers have jobs.

@Fr86- I agree, we should be out of the nation building; but how, after nearly 6 years of Obama, it is STILL Bush’s fault?

    @ # 15

How is it still Bush’s fault? Because he started something, a LIE, that is so large that it takes so long to end. Two, Obama is no different than Bush: a war criminal who belongs a in a cumfy "room" in The Hague.

    To Grubt,

Yes, it is Bush’s fault as well as Cheney’s. Further, Obama has had the authority to change the bankrupt policies of Bush/Cheney but hasn’t. Instead he’s perpetuated them and continued to put our men and women in harm’s way for no reason other than to placate his supporters that need wars to make money.

With the technology we have today we don’t need to continue to practice these outmoded deployments and waste taxpayers dollars that could be used to stimulate improvements to our own infrastructures and economy…………….which are also the victims of the Bush/Cheney policies.

Obama and our congress/senate could do much more to bring this country out of the mess we’re in but they haven’t. Clearly new leadership with new ideas and good old American guts is needed…….but they’re at sea!!!!!

This is a normal deployment, like those that have been ongoing since long before either Bush or Obama. Med Floats and WestPac Cruises weren’t Bush’s idea. I wish people would know what they’re complaining about before they complain, or at least save your politicizing everything for things that make sense to blame on Bush or Obama.
