Motorist who died after plunging off mountain highway identified

MOUNTAIN CENTER – A motorist who was fatally injured when her car careened off state Route 74 near Mountain Center and plunged down a 200-foot slope was identified as Kathi Vogley, 65, of Idyllwild.

The fatality occurred at about 2 p.m. on Wednesday in the vicinity of McCall Memorial Park, just west of the split for the 74 and state Route 243, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Vogley was ejected from her vehicle as it plummeted down the slope. Paramedics reached her less than 30 minutes later, but she was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the fire department.

The California Highway Patrol was investigating the crash.
