State Route 243 between Banning and Idyllwild will be partially closed next week to permit crews to repair a sinkhole and related damage from last winter’s storms.
According to Caltrans, one lane on the two-lane mountain highway will be shut down continuously over 24-hour periods, beginning 6 a.m. Monday and continuing to noon Nov. 20.
Traffic control measures will be in place from the Vista Grande Road turnout to the U.S. Forest Service’s Vista Grande Fire Station nearly a mile south, Caltrans said.
The agency cautioned motorists to travel at safe speeds and consider using alternate routes through Palm Springs and Beaumont for north-south travel to avoid the construction zone if possible.
Crews are working to shore up a damaged culvert and eroded slopes that formed a sinkhole on the edge of the highway, officials said.
The $1.5 million repair job began at the end of last winter and is expected to wrap up before Christmas, according to Caltrans.
